Engineering Co-op Student - Portsmouth, NH / Newport News, VA
Position Summary:
The Engineering Co-Op/ Internship is designed to expose the candidate to a variety of technical challenges and aid both the employer and employee in developing a partnership focused on learning, growth, and career path development. In this technical role, the intern will work under the leadership of the Engineering Director and various managers as coaches and mentors during the term. This includes plant engineering, manufacturing CI specialists, packaging specialists, and production managers as interests and projects develop.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- With this experience, the intern will gain confidence and the capability to work independently in a variety of areas within engineering and plant manufacturing teams.
- Plant/Project Engineering:
- Aid in building project/equipment specification documents for the engineering department
- Participate in equipment testing protocols
- Assist Plant Engineers in the installation, debugging and startup of new production equipment
- Assist with contractor / vendor management as required
- Process Improvement/ Manufacturing:
- Work with assigned manager to draft process ideas to reduce costs and improve production rates
- Design tooling, fixtures, equipment modifications for fabrication using ACAD, Solidworks
- Manage outside contractors to complete proposed work
- Aid in the designing and testing of process upgrades and new process systems
- Support the operation to meet safety, quality and reliability metrics
- Assist in data collection for Sustainability improvements (waste reduction, energy savings)
- Packaging Engineering:
- Assist Packaging Team in production tests and collect cause/effect data
- Aid in packaging development/selection of new products as assigned
- Data collection and vendor management as required
- Other Duties/Responsibilities:
- Participates in Team, Department and Plant meetings and related activities to represent operations and support projects
- Maintains good working relationships with peers, technicians and leadership, etc and interfaces with necessary support function
Qualifications:
- High School Diploma or Equivalent, Pursuing BS Degree in Engineering (preferred area of study: Mechanical Engineering)
- Completion of Sophomore Year of Study
- Demonstrated completion/experience of at least one prior Co-Op/Internship
- Must be able to evaluate engineering problems and be able to devise cause and affect relationships and propose solutions
- Must be able to work without sponsorship
- Must be able to work in both an office and plant environment and comply with all safety procedures
- Positive communication skills (verbal and written) as well as organizational skills to prioritize and plan work, multi-task and meet project deadlines
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Applications
- Proficient in ACAD, and or Solidworks a strong preference
- Self-motivated to excel in fast paced manufacturing environment
- Bonus: prior knowledge/ experience in Consumer Goods, or Food Manufacturing
