Microsoft Corporation has an immediate opening for a Law Enforcement Response Specialist to join its Law Enforcement and National Security (LENS) team. The successful candidate will be highly-organized, motivated, and comfortable with working both independently and as part of a global team. Once training has been fully completed, a new response specialist may work remotely up to 50% of the time in our hybrid environment.


Organization

LENS is an integral part of the Customer Security and Trust (CST) organization within Corporate, External and Legal Affairs (CELA). The CST organization is comprised of multiple teams responsible for Microsoft’s public policy and compliance practices relating to cybersecurity, cybercrime, critical infrastructure protection, security engineering, online safety, and lawful access. As part of CST, the LENS team is responsible for balancing public safety and global trust in Microsoft through principled advocacy, and compliance with government demands that respect the rule of law and protect our customers’ privacy. LENS provides this support for Microsoft’s online services such as Hotmail & Outlook.com, OneDrive, Xbox Live, Skype, etc.


Within the global LENS team, response specialists review and respond to criminal and civil legal demands in compliance with Microsoft’s lawful access policies, customer commitments, and applicable laws. Specialists are responsible for ensuring that these requests are processed both expeditiously and accurately. This requires a keen eye for detail, superior judgement, and effective multi-tasking abilities.


In addition to responding to legal demands, Specialists also assist other teams at Microsoft in support of the company’s commitments to customer security and digital safety. These teams are engaged in the detection and prevention of child exploitation, cybercrime, business email compromise, and other enforcement efforts to protect our customers’ security and privacy. The role also involves regular engagement with law enforcement agencies, providing training on Microsoft’s policies and process.


Responsibilities


  • Providing timely and accurate responses to legal demands from global law enforcement authorities consistent with Microsoft’s lawful access policies, customer commitments, and applicable laws.

  • Management of sensitive legal escalations as part of a team of attorneys, product specialists and engineers.

  • Participation in the LENS emergency response team on-call rotation, which provides 24/7 support for emergency law enforcement escalations.

  • Engaging with government authorities and other CELA contacts to respond to process and policy questions, and to resolve legal document ambiguities.

  • Improving operational efficiencies by contributing to policies and procedures, and by providing feedback to engineering teams responsible for LENS-specific tools.

  • Demonstrates an understanding of mapping or how systems work and impact one another.

  • Collaborates with others who work with other teams (e.g., engineering, product groups) to ensure program processes are rigorous and executed efficiently. Helps develop processes around scope and scheduled changes for programs, and communicates them to stakeholders.

  • Collaborates with others to understand overall business goals, objectives, and strategies, as well as short- and long-term business priorities. Understands and identifies current program risks, impact, and mitigation plans in collaboration with others.

Qualifications


Minimum/Required Qualifications

  • Bachelors Degree in business or operations AND 2+ years work experience in program management, process management, process improvement OR equivalent experience

  • 2+ years of experience handling law enforcement, privacy, security, incident response, and/or other investigatory requests in the government, telecommunications, or the technology industry as an investigator, responder, and/or paralegal

  • 1+ years using advanced analytical, research and writing capabilities

  • US Citizenship

  • Detail-oriented, well-organized, proactive solution based problem solver

  • Flexibility with multi-tasking functions in a dynamic environment and the ability to prioritize concurrent high-profile issues

  • Ability to understand a variety of technologies, business interests, and political and regulatory goals

  • Ability to maintain availability for scheduled 24/7 emergency response program rotation

  • Prior experience handling law enforcement, privacy, security, incident response, or other investigatory requests either in the government, telecommunications, or the technology industry as an investigator, responder, or paralegal

  • Prior experience with privacy laws, data retention laws, and/or surveillance laws

  • CIPP privacy compliance certification, or the ability to obtain and maintain certification

  • Written and/or verbal proficiency in one or more of the following languages: Spanish and/or Portuguese

  • Familiarity with the technology industry and the impact of social media highly desirable

  • Opportunity to work non-standard hours. As a global team, LENS has a large window of core hours
