Description


NATURE OF WORK


This classification involves manual work and services for the City. Based on area of assignment, an employee in this position performs routine manual work in construction, maintenance, and repair of buildings, streets, sewers, water lines, and other installations; sprays foliage, trims trees, and performs other landscaping duties; assists with concrete work; installs signs and erects barricades; digs ditches; levels dirt and asphalt; and loads/unloads trucks. This position also sweeps walks; picks up litter and brush; and cleans/washes vehicles.


Examples of Duties


ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS (Based on area of assignment)


Public Works: Streets


  • Loads and unloads dirt, shell, sand, cement, timbers, reinforcing steel, and other construction materials.

  • Fills pavement cracks with asphalt; rakes asphalt paving mix in repair of streets; patches potholes with hot asphalt; places lime rock.

  • Assists in digging grade and setting forms for concrete work; wheels dirt, sand, concrete, and other materials; and tamps and levels concrete. Performs sidewalk grinds.

  • Assists in repairing leaks in mains; digs and backfills ditches; assists in caulking joints; cleans catch basins; installs drainpipes; and unstops clogged sewers.

  • Drives automotive vehicles and construction equipment to and from job sites as needed.

  • Assists with preventive field maintenance consisting of oiling and lubricating equipment.

  • Install Temporary Traffic Control for safety.

  • Sweeps walks; removes refuse and paper from grounds and buildings.

  • Digs and cleans ditches and trenches; levels dirt and asphalt; drives stakes; and breaks up rocks and concrete.

  • Install and maintains street traffic signage.

  • Loads and unloads heavy materials and tools from trucks and vans; moves or aids in moving heavy boxes or equipment and large, bulky objects; and cleans/washes vehicles.

  • Receives job training in semi-skilled and skilled trades.

  • Follow safe work practices to eliminate & mitigate hazardous conditions & behaviors at the work environment.

  • Promotes a culture of safety within the organization.

  • Performs related work as required.



Requirements



EDUCATION

  • Graduation from an accredited high school/vocational school or G.E.D. equivalency diploma


  • PROOF OF THE
    HIGHEST LEVEL OF COMPLETED EDUCATION MUST BE SUBMITTED AS AN ATTACHMENT WITH APPLICATION. (Applications without attached proof of education will not be processed for consideration.)



EXPERIENCE



  • Six (6) months of satisfactory performance and permanent status as a Maintenance Worker I or Field Maintenance Worker with the City of Sunrise


OR


  • One (1) year of fulltime work experience in Building Maintenance or Public Works (Grounds, Streets, and/or Stormwater) maintenance and/or repair functions.


NECESSARY SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS



  • Must possess a valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Class B or higher with an acceptable driving record. (Will be required to maintain license as condition of employment in this position)

  • Must obtain a valid Florida Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Class B or higher prior to hire. (Will be required to maintain license as condition of employment in this position)

  • Ability to operate any of the following: trucks with hydraulic lift, small tractors, skid steers, small rollers, power tools and equipment

  • Ability to perform heavy manual labor

  • Must pass pre-employment and random drug testing as required and monitored by DOT 49 C.F.R. Part 382



PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS




Work Environment


  • Tasks are regularly performed outdoors with potential exposure to the following conditions: varying temperatures, inclement weather, and/or other adverse conditions.

Sensory



  • The ability to perceive and differentiate visual cues or signals. Tasks require the ability to communicate orally and in writing. Must have the use of sensory skills in order to effectively communicate and interact with other employees and the public through personal contact, the use of the telephone and/or other City-issued technology devices.

Physical



  • Physical capability to effectively use and operate City assigned vehicles, golf carts, and manual or power tools.

  • Sufficient physical strength and agility to do heavy manual labor, often under adverse weather conditions.

  • Ability to climb, balance, bend, stoop, squat, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach, push and/or pull, twist and make repetitive hand movements.

  • Ability to walk, stand and sit for prolonged periods of time.

  • Ability to load, carry, lift, push and/or pull objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
