Youth Symphony Conductor Job Description
The Youth Music Illinois Youth Symphony Conductor has overall responsibility for the training and artistic development of Youth Symphony members. They report to the Executive Director and works closely with the Executive Director and conductors of the other orchestras and ensembles.
The Youth Symphony meets on Sundays from 3:00-5:30, September through December and February through April.
Pay will be a per-service rate, commensurate with experience.
GOAL:
The goal of the Youth Symphony is student education, providing a foundation in ensemble skills to the advancing music students of Central Illinois.
The Conductor promotes individual and corporate growth within the Youth Symphony by stimulating members intellectually and artistically, and sustaining community interest in the YMI.
CONDUCTOR DUTIES:
1. CONDUCTING: all rehearsals and performances. The Youth Symphony Conductor is responsible for securing a substitute when necessary, at the approval of the Executive Director
2. EVALUATION: The Executive Director will take into account the Conductor s final report, annual student survey results, and ability to fulfill conductor duties, at an annual performance review in May each year.
3. PLANNING:
a. Meets no less than bi-annually with the Executive Director to review and establish short- and long-term Youth Symphony programming plans.
b. Is responsible for executing agreed upon plans.
c. Assists in preparing the annual schedule of rehearsals, concerts and special events.
4. MUSIC SELECTION:
a. Selects all music and materials for study and performance to meet educational goals.
b. After approval by Executive Director every attempt shall be made by the conductor to assist in sourcing of music.
c. Conductor is responsible for ensuring music is properly marked before distribution.
5. AUDTIONS AND SEATING:
a. Approves audition selections.
b. Hears auditions for membership, determines acceptances into Youth Symphony, and makes recommendation of students ready for Youth Symphony.
6. CONCERT/EVENT PROGRAMMING:
a. Provides concert program information to Executive Director no later than 4 weeks prior to event.
b. Provides special equipment needs list to Executive Director no later than 3 weeks prior to event.
7. YMI PROGRAM SUPPORT:
Engages with families and YMI supporters by attending YMI Annual Silent Auction Fundraiser, when available.
8. RECRUITING:
Participates in recruiting efforts through school visits and contact with school &
private music instructors; works to maintain excellent relations with music instructors and professional musicians in the region.
9. PROGRAM EVALUATION:
a. Continuously evaluates the training and performance of the Youth Symphony and presents a report outlining overall accomplishments, strengths and weaknesses at the conclusion of each orchestra season to the Executive Director.
b. In cooperation with the Executive Director & Executive Director, periodically reviews the status of orchestra members.
10. COMMUNITY RELATIONS: Serves as official spokesperson for the orchestra when requested.
11. Represents the Youth Symphony at committee and board meetings, as requested.
12. Performs other duties as requested and agreed upon between the Youth Symphony Conductor and Executive Director.
Qualifications
- Experience conducting youth orchestras or symphonies
- Strong musical background and knowledge of orchestral repertoire
- Strong leadership and organizational skills to manage a youth symphony efficiently
